How to Commission a Custom Portrait
Whether you're looking for a custom pet portrait, a family painting, or a hand-painted portrait of someone special, the process is simple. Here's exactly what to expect, from first message to finished piece.
Reach Out
Start by sending a message through the commission form. Tell me a little about what you're looking for — a custom pet portrait, a family piece, or something else entirely. There's no pressure at this stage; I'm happy to answer questions and help you figure out what's possible.
Choose Your Photos
Good reference photos make a great painting. Pick images with clear lighting, natural expressions, and the details you want captured. For custom pet portraits, I especially love photos that show personality — a head tilt, a favorite toy, or that particular way they look at you.
Set the Details
Together we'll settle on size, medium, and timeline. I work primarily in oil and charcoal, and sizes range from intimate 8×10" studies to larger statement pieces. We'll also talk about background preferences and any special elements you'd like included.
Approve the Sketch
Before paint ever touches canvas, I'll share a preliminary sketch or digital composition so you can see the layout and make adjustments. This is the moment to refine poses, cropping, or expression — changes are much easier now than later in the hand-painted portrait process.
The Painting Process
This is where the real magic happens. I work in layers, building form and color gradually. The hand-painted portrait process usually takes several sessions as paint dries between layers. I don't rush — each piece gets the time it needs to feel alive.
Review & Refine
Once the painting is nearly complete, I'll share progress images for your feedback. Small tweaks to color, expression, or detail are totally normal at this stage. My goal is for you to feel completely confident about the finished piece before it leaves the studio.
Delivery & Care
Your finished portrait is carefully packaged and shipped, or ready for local pickup. I'll include simple care instructions so your custom artwork stays beautiful for years — things like ideal hanging conditions and gentle cleaning tips.
